CBT or Psychodynamic Therapy?
You may have heard CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) mentioned a lot recently, perhaps by your GP or in the media. CBT is very popular as a short-term therapy approach that focuses on changing thoughts and beliefs. CBT is different from a psychodynamic approach, in that it doesn't aim to explore underlying feelings or emotions and it doesn't look at your past relationships or early experiences. If you go to a CBT therapist you will be set homework and tasks aimed at helping you to change your short-term thought patterns and behaviours. A psychodynamic therapist will encourage you to explore deeply your feelings and experiences, this will enable you to gain insight, catharsis and resolve long-standing problems. Different therapies suit different people; it is important that you choose the right therapy for you.
